Acura Tech Tip: Clunk From The Rear Suspension When Hitting Bumps

Inspect the rear dampers for any leaks or damage to make sure the dampers themselves are not the cause of the noise. Replace the damping rubber from both rear dampers with the updated damping rubber in the repair kit.

Models: 2013-2017 ILX

Condition:

The rear damping rubber is transmitting excessive noise from the rear suspension to the body and cabin area.

Corrective Action:

Inspect the rear dampers for any leaks or damage to make sure the dampers themselves are not the cause of the noise. Replace the damping rubber from both rear dampers with the updated damping rubber in the repair kit.

Repair Procedure:

1. Remove the rear damping rubber as outlined in the service information.
> The upper and lower damping rubber from the replacement kit are not of the same material and must be installed as shown to correctly complete this bulletin.
> The upper damping rubber has a 6 molded onto its side.
> The lower damping rubber has white paint marks at two locations.
2. Assemble and install the rear damper as outlined in the service information. Make sure you replace the removed hardware with the new self-locking nuts and flange bolts.
3. Loosely install the lower flange bolt to 44 ft/lbs.
4. In order to avoid damaging the lower bushing in the damper, raise the rear suspension with a jack, then tighten the flange bolt to the specified torque.

Honda Indirect TPMS Systems

Honda indirect TPMS systems do not have air pressure sensors inside the tires.

Indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) are systems that do not have air pressure sensors inside the tires. Rather, they detect a low tire by comparing relative wheel speeds via the Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) wheel speed sensors. When a tire loses air, its diameter decreases slightly.

Older indirect TPMS are not as sensitive to changes in tire pressure as direct systems that actually monitor the air pressure inside the tire, but they are not as expensive either.
