Description

One or more of the following fault codes may be stored in the ECM Fault Memory:

• P043E, P043F, P0440, P0441, P0442, P0443, P0444, P0445, P0447, P0448, P0449, P0455, P0456, P0457, P0458, P0459, P0496.

Performing a function test and vacuum check on the Canister Purge Valve -N80- are essential for proper diagnosis and avoiding any unnecessary replacements.

1. Using VCDS, perform the Guided Fault Finding test plan for the Canister Purge Valve -N80- by following the on-screen prompts.

2. When the test starts, the -N80- Canister Purge Valve will be activated via the output diagnosis test mode, listen and/or feel for an audible “click” sound coming from the -N80- purge valve. The audible “click” sound may be heard easier if the vehicle hood is open.

a. If audible “click” noise is heard, the -N80- Activated Charcoal Filter System Solenoid Valve is operational, and a vacuum check must be performed to verify if the valve is sealing properly.

b. If audible “click” noise is not heard, this bulletin does not apply, continue Guided Fault Finding based diagnosis.

3. Disconnect the -N80- purge valve from the engine. Attach the VAS6213 Vacuum/Pressure pump to the engine side of the valve (side flow indicator on valve points to) and apply approximately -0.6 Bar (-450 mmHg) of vacuum.

a. Proper installation of the vacuum pump on the Canister Purge Valve -N80- is essential (Photo 2).

  4. If the valve holds vacuum, DO NOT replace it. Continue with normal diagnosis.

Fuel Pumps and Cranking

Diagnosing the problem comes down to understanding what causes a loss of fuel pressure.

Here is a diagnostic puzzle: An owner comes to your shop complaining that it takes longer than expected to start his car’s engine in the morning. There are no codes for the crankshaft and camshaft sensors. And, the oil pressure is within specifications. If you are lucky, you might have a code for low fuel pressure on the high side of the direct injection system. What could be the source of the problem?
