The Porsche Tuned Intake

The Porsche Tuned Intake

Vehicles like the 2015 Porsche Cayenne with the Turbocharged V8 tune the intake noise to add to the driving experience.

The air intake from the throttle body to the air inlet can be the source of noise that automakers tune for the customer who is purchasing a vehicle. Some economy sedans and SUVs might have three resonance chambers to cancel out noise from the engine. Other vehicles like the 2015 Porsche Cayenne with the Turbocharged V8 engine tune the intake noise to add to the driving experience.

The system uses valves inside the air filter housing to take the best sound of induction and channel the noise to the cabin with inlets in the front fenders. The sounds are tuned to make the proper Porsche sound. Engineers tested the system in a special chamber with a camera that can see noise and microphones that can mimic the human ear. The intake system is tuned along with the exhaust system so the owner of this $100,000 SUV knows they are driving a Porsche.

VW/Audi PCV Service

The PCV valve regulates the flow of gases from the crankcase.

Positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) systems have been on just about every vehicle since the late 1960s. The systems route crankcase vapors and droplets into the intake manifold so they are burned in the combustion chamber or catalytic converter.

The PCV valve uses the vacuum from the intake manifold to regulate the flow of gases from the crankcase. The pintle or ball inside the valve moves in response to the pressure difference between the crankcase and the intake manifold. The valve is typically located between the throttle body and cylinder head on a runner for the intake manifold.
