Polyurethane, FEP and Nitrile seals don’t always fare well in resisting chemicals and handling engine temperature extremes. But, PTFE oil seals do. PTFE has come a long way over the years and is now the ideal material for critical cylinder head and engine block applications. With a wider operating temperature and a low coefficient of friction, it makes for an excellent shaft seal.
Because PTFE seals are different than traditional seals, some special application tips are helpful.
- Always install the seal “dry” because a proper seal can’t be achieved if grease or oil is present.
- Keep the sealing surface completely smooth by removing any sharp edges or burrs.
- Install it with a plastic tool (usually supplied) to ensure that the seal lip isn’t compromised.
- Wait at least four hours before operating the motor to ensure proper positioning.
