Volkswagen Tech Tip: Humming Noise During Cornering

A humming sound coming from the general area of the front end of an affected vehicle (see article for list) may be noticeable during slow speed turns with the steering wheel almost to full-turning position. The noise goes away when the steering wheel is returned to the center position.

A humming sound coming from the general area of the front end of an affected vehicle (see below) may be noticeable during slow speed turns with the steering wheel almost to full-turning position. The noise goes away when the steering wheel is returned to the center position.

Affected Models:
• 1998-on New Beetle w/02J transmission; and
• 1999-on New Golf, New Jetta w/02J transmission.

The noise may be generated from a differential spider gear contacting the one-piece thrust washer under load.

Service Procedure:
If a vehicle exhibits this condition, do the following:
1. Drain the transmission fluid.
2. Refill the transmission with oil P/N G 052 171 (see VESIS for fill quantities).
Note: Part numbers are for reference only. Always check for the latest parts information.
3. Road-test the vehicle to confirm that the noise has been eliminated.

Today’s Fuel Pressure Diagnostics

Direct injection pressure is measured with sensors, and the signals are used to determine pump speed and/or volume.

Ever since the fuel pump was moved to the fuel tank, fuel pressure replaced the float height as a measure of fuel system health and performance. Checking the height of the float might have required some disassembly or special tools to bend the arms of the float.

When the shift was made to port or throttle body fuel injection, all a technician needed to diagnose a fuel problem was a set of “noid lights,” a fuel pressure gauge and maybe a multi-meter. Measuring the fuel pressure typically required checking the pressure at idle and under load. Most of the these tools can’t be used on the high pressure side of a direct-injection system because of higher pressures and changes in the injector location and technology.
