Some owners of 2002-’05 Sedona vehicles produced from 5/1/2001-8/31/2005 may complain of front suspension noises over rough road surfaces at speeds between 18-31 mph. To reduce the noise, Kia has redesigned the strut mount with a modified rubber composition to improve the overall sound dampening in the affected speed range.

However, all other suspension components should be checked for performance prior to installing these replacement strut mounts. Concerns with worn out struts and/or rubber mounting components should be addressed before installing these revised mounts. Note: This TSB should be used for customer complaints only at speeds between 18-31 mph.

Note: Use date coding on the mount assembly to determine whether the mount is of the latest configuration (Note the three letters stamped on top of the mount). The days of the month run A-Z then 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 due to the fact there are only 26 alpha letters available.

Service Procedure:
1. Raise and properly support the vehicle.

2. Remove the front tire and wheel assembly.

3. Remove the two lower strut-to-upper-steering-knuckle bolts on each side.

4. Disconnect the brake hose and ABS wheel speed sensor from the strut assembly.

Note: Note the orientation of the mount before removal from the vehicle.

5. Open the hood and remove the four upper strut retaining nuts.

6. Remove the strut assembly from the vehicle. Mount it into the strut compressor.

7. Compress the strut assembly using the manufacturer’s instructions provided with the tool and replace the upper strut mount assembly as required. Torque the strut-to-strut mount nut to 88-101 lbs.-ft. (120-137 Nm).

Note: Position the dimple to match the mount orientation as removed in Step 5.

8. Install the strut assembly into the vehicle. Tighten the four upper mount nuts to 33-46 lbs.-ft. (46-62 Nm).

9. Connect the brake hose and ABS speed sensor to their retaining bracket.

10. Install the two (2) lower strut-to-upper-steering-knuckle bolts and nuts; tighten to 65-79 lbs.-ft. (88-108 Nm).

11. Install the wheel and tire assembly. Tighten the lug nuts to 65-79 lbs.-ft. (88-108 Nm).

12. Repeat the procedure for the other side, if necessary.

13. Perform a wheel alignment.

Today’s Fuel Pressure Diagnostics

Direct injection pressure is measured with sensors, and the signals are used to determine pump speed and/or volume.

Ever since the fuel pump was moved to the fuel tank, fuel pressure replaced the float height as a measure of fuel system health and performance. Checking the height of the float might have required some disassembly or special tools to bend the arms of the float.

When the shift was made to port or throttle body fuel injection, all a technician needed to diagnose a fuel problem was a set of “noid lights,” a fuel pressure gauge and maybe a multi-meter. Measuring the fuel pressure typically required checking the pressure at idle and under load. Most of the these tools can’t be used on the high pressure side of a direct-injection system because of higher pressures and changes in the injector location and technology.
