2017 BMW 5 Series Sedan
The seventh generation of the BMW 5 Series sedan will cut a sporty, elegant and stylish figure when it hits the roads in markets around the world in February 2017. Further enhanced dynamics, an unbeatable line-up of assistance systems, an unmatched degree of connectivity, and a new and innovative operating system are the most important new features.
Rigorous application of the BMW EfficientLightweight design concept, with increased use of aluminum and high-strength steels, reduces the weight of the 5 Series sedan by up to 220 pounds from that of its predecessor.
All the engines in the 5 Series sedan lineup belong to the newly developed, modular BMW EfficientDynamics family of power units. BMW TwinPower Turbo technology imbues all the members of the family with outstanding performance and exceptional efficiency. Two diesel engines and two petrol variants will be available from launch, working in tandem with either rear-wheel drive or BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive.
In March 2017, the BMW M550i xDrive will take over as the sporting highlight of the new BMW 5 Series range, for the time being at least. Its V8 engine — capable of 340 kW/462 hp and 650 Nm (479 lb.-ft). of torque — impresses not only with its remarkable performance, but also with its efficiency.
BMW 7 Series Wins ‘Car Connectivity Award’
More than 80 technologies in 11 categories were entered in the “Car Connectivity Award” readers’ survey conducted by German motoring journal Auto Motor Und Sport and computer magazine CHIP. The BMW 7 Series was crowned the vehicle with the best connectivity in the “Connected Cars” category. Among the 32,495 votes that were submitted, 27.9% were cast in favor of the BMW 7 Series.
The BMW 7 Series performed impressively thanks to a wealth of newly developed assistance systems, such as Remote Control Parking. The BMW 7 Series is the world’s first series-produced car that can be maneuvered into and back out of perpendicular parking spaces or garages without a driver at the wheel. This function is activated by the driver outside using the BMW Display Key, and is carried out semi-automatically by the car.
Another example of the link-up between different systems is the steering and lane control assistant. This includes the traffic jam assistant, which controls the car’s speed down to a standstill and eases the stress on the driver in traffic congestion.
Likewise showcasing exceptional connectivity are the services from BMW ConnectedDrive in the BMW 7 Series. They include Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI), Online Entertainment and Intelligent Emergency Call with accident severity detection. For all of these services, the SIM card embedded in the car establishes the connection with the mobile phone network.
