Audi: Transmission Does Not Shift Due To Cabin Air Filter

Model: 2001 Audi A6 Avant Quattro, 2.8L

Complaint

The customer states the transmission does not shift.

Cause

Confirmed the customer’s complaint and found the transmission did not shift. Inspected the automatic transmission fluid level and condition and found both were within specifications. Connected a scan tool to communicate with the automatic transmission control module (TCM) and found the automatic TCM did not communicate with the scan tool. Performed a visual inspection of the automatic TCM and found water had leaked into it.

Disconnected the automatic TCM connector and found the automatic TCM terminals were excessively corroded. Upon further inspection, found the cabin air filter cover was not placed in the proper position and allowed water to leak through the filter, into the vehicle and under the body.

Correction

Replaced the automatic TCM and cabin air filter and verified the vehicle operated properly. The customer’s concern did not return.

Mercedes-Benz ABC Suspensions

The system provides great ride & handling, but it can be complicated to service if you do not have the right training.

Mercedes-Benz uses two different adjustable suspension systems in its vehicles – Airmatic and Active Body Control (ABC). Airmatic, as the name implies, is its air suspension system which we discussed back in April of this year. ABC uses hydraulic fluid at tremendous pressures to actively change the stiffness of the springs inside the shock assemblies, changing vehicle dynamics and ride height. This can be done automatically based on sensor inputs and module programming, or at the push of a button located near the shifter.
