Mercedes-Benz Tech Tip: Convertible Top Inoperative

Found the convertible top hydraulic pump motor was running, but the top did not move. Connected a scan tool to check for codes and found no codes were displayed. Attempted to lower the top with a scan tool - got the same results.

Vehicle:

1999, Mercedes-Benz CLK320, 3.2L

Cause:

Found the convertible top hydraulic pump motor was running, but the top did not move. Connected a scan tool to check for codes and found no codes were displayed. Attempted to lower the top with a scan tool — got the same results. Accessed the convertible top hydraulic pump, checked the fluid level and found the fluid level was correct. Disconnected the connector for the convertible top hydraulic pump motor, inspected the connector, terminals and wiring harness and found no faults. Used a fused set of jumper wires, applied voltage and ground to the pump motor and found the motor ran. These tests indicated an internal fault was present in the convertible top hydraulic pump, verifying that the convertible top hydraulic pump was faulty.

Correction:

Replaced the convertible top hydraulic pump and verified the vehicle operated properly. The customer’s concern did not return.

Mercedes-Benz ABC Suspensions

The system provides great ride & handling, but it can be complicated to service if you do not have the right training.

Mercedes-Benz uses two different adjustable suspension systems in its vehicles – Airmatic and Active Body Control (ABC). Airmatic, as the name implies, is its air suspension system which we discussed back in April of this year. ABC uses hydraulic fluid at tremendous pressures to actively change the stiffness of the springs inside the shock assemblies, changing vehicle dynamics and ride height. This can be done automatically based on sensor inputs and module programming, or at the push of a button located near the shifter.
