Tech Tip: Intermittent ABS Operation Caused by Cracked Sensor Ring

Rust can develop between the axle and the ABS speed sensor ring. The rust acts like a wedge and causes the ring to crack, creating a false or erratic signal that results in intermittent ABS operation.

Application: Vehicles equipped with ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) sensor rings located on the outer drive axle joint. See Fig. 1. Figure 1

Problem: Intermittent ABS failure or trouble codes.

Cause: Rust can develop between the axle and the ABS speed sensor ring. The rust acts like a wedge and causes the ring to crack, creating a false or erratic signal that results in intermittent ABS operation.

Solution: Closely inspect the sensor ring for cracks or damage to the teeth. If any defects are found, replace the sensor ring or CV drive axle.

Note: Always remove any metal particles on the magnetic portion of the sensors.

VW/Audi PCV Service

The PCV valve regulates the flow of gases from the crankcase.

Positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) systems have been on just about every vehicle since the late 1960s. The systems route crankcase vapors and droplets into the intake manifold so they are burned in the combustion chamber or catalytic converter.

The PCV valve uses the vacuum from the intake manifold to regulate the flow of gases from the crankcase. The pintle or ball inside the valve moves in response to the pressure difference between the crankcase and the intake manifold. The valve is typically located between the throttle body and cylinder head on a runner for the intake manifold.
