Toyota Adds 1.4M Cars to Largest-Ever Recall

Toyota has added roughly 1.4 million vehicles to what has become the largest vehicle recall in U.S. history.

Toyota has added roughly 1.4 million vehicles to what has become the largest vehicle recall in U.S. history, the Associated Press reported.

The recall is centered around air bags manufactured by Japan’s Takata Corp., which have been found to burn too quickly and send shrapnel into the passenger compartment. The malfunction has been blamed for at least seven deaths and more than 100 injuries.

Takata announced in May that it was expanding its recall to 33.8 million vehicles overall.  The news came after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration pressured Takata to expand the scope of its recall.

The 1.4 million newly added vehicles include the 2003-07 Matrix and Corolla, 2005-06 Tundra pickup, 2005-07 Sequoia SUV, and the 2003-07 Lexus SC430 convertible.

“We will continue to respond promptly to new developments so we can resolve issues for them as quickly and safely as possible,” Toyota Motor North America Chief Quality Officer Dino Triantafyllos said.
