Federal-Mogul Corp. and its Wagner Brake brand are leading the automotive industry’s rapid shift to environmentally friendly low-copper brake pads. More than 1 million new 2014 vehicles from leading original equipment light vehicle manufacturers will be equipped with Federal-Mogul’s Eco-Friction pads, according to Federal-Mogul. In the aftermarket, Federal-Mogul recently introduced Wagner ThermoQuiet CeramicNXT brake pads featuring what the company states to be the first full-line offering of 2021-compliant low-copper formulations.

“As the No. 1 global manufacturer of friction for the total OE and replacement market, we have taken the lead in developing eco-friendly formulations that also provide improvements in overall brake pad performance,” said Martin Hendricks, vice president and general manager, braking, Federal-Mogul Vehicle Components segment.

Recent legislation in California and Washington has mandated that copper content in friction formulations be reduced below 5 percent (low-copper) by 2021. Federal-Mogul says that its product development is well ahead of that requirement.

Now featured in Wagner ThermoQuiet CeramicNXT pads, Federal-Mogul’s new Wagner OE21 low-copper formulations are 35 percent quieter and offer 15 percent more stopping power and up to 40 percent greater fade resistance than previous formulations, according to the company.

Timing BMW VANOS N53 And N54

To service them, you will need the appropriate toolset to lock the crank and camshaft.

The BMW N53 (naturally aspired) and N54 (turbocharged) engines were among the first BMW engines to come with variable valve timing on the intake and exhaust camshafts. The N53 and N54 straight-six have unfairly earned a bad reputation for reliability with technicians due to timing chain and variable valve timing problems. The reputation comes from owners not keeping up with oil changes and it is difficult to check engine timing.
