Carley’s Corner: A Car Guy Goes ‘Green’

There have been a lot of headlines lately about global warming, climate change, environmental concerns and high gasoline prices. These are huge, complex issues with no easy answers. The bottom line is the world has a lot of people driving a lot of cars, and they are burning up a lot of fuel. There are

Climate Equipment: Hey, It’s Cold in Here!

Wherever two or more shall gather… Somebody is bound to be too hot or too cold! It seems to be a fact of life, people can never agree about the temperature inside. This one says it’s too hot, while that one says it’s too cold. One thing we can all agree on is that we

Tech Feature: Reasons for Piston Replacement

Though pistons can often be salvaged when rebuilding or remanufacturing an engine, sometimes they have to be replaced. The original pistons may have worn or damaged ring grooves, wrist pins or skirts, or they may have cracks. New pistons may also be necessary if the cylinders have too much taper wear and the block has to be bored to oversize. Or, maybe you just don’t want to reuse the original pistons if you’re building a performance engine or a high load engine like a diesel light-duty pickup truck.

Tech Tip: Ford Pickup Upshifts Below 15 mph

A 1989-’95 Ford pickup equipped with four-wheel drive and a manually shifted transfer case may upshift to third gear under 15 mph while in two-wheel drive. This may be caused by a false four-low signal at the controller. With the transfer case in two-wheel drive and the engine running, check the voltage at controller pin 14 on 1994-’95 7.3L Turbo diesel models or pin 12 on all other models.

GMC/Chevy Light Truck: Central Port Fuel Injection Diagnosis

Back in 1992, General Motors introduced a new type of fuel injection system known as “Central Port Injection” (CPI), which GM also refers to as “Central Multi-point Fuel Injection” (CMFI). The system was used on 4.3L V6 Vortec engines through 1995, and was redesigned in 1996 and renamed “Central Sequential Fuel Injection” (CSFI). The system

Tech Feature: Getting Up to Speed on Hybrid Vehicles

Hybrids are hot. As the price of gasoline goes up, so does the demand for new vehicles that can squeeze more miles per gallon from every drop of gasoline. Hybrids do that by combining the best of both worlds: electric power for low-speed, stop-and-go driving, and gasoline power for highway cruising and long-range driving.
