Mercedes-Benz Active Body Control (ABC) Suspension Tips

ABC suspension systems can be complicated to service if you do not have the right tools, training or knowledge.

Audi Active Suspension Service

The key to servicing these systems is proper information and understanding precisely how these systems operate.

Porsche Active Motor Mounts

Over the years, motor mounts have evolved from when they were just an item to mount the engine to the frame or unibody.

Active Ride Control: Comfort, Control And Wheel Travel All In One Sway Bar

Imagine a car without sway bars. The car would experience body roll around corners, but off road and in a straight line, the tires would maintain better contact with rougher roads at lower speed for better traction. However, at higher speeds, the body movement around corners would negate this effect. If you increased the spring rate, it would reduce body roll but would impact ride comfort.

Active Ride Control: Diagnostics And Replacement Options

For a shock or strut to be active, it must be able to react to three critical streams of information. First, it must act on information from the ABS and stability control system. Second, it must measure body movement. Third, it must detect the extent and rate of suspension movement.

Advanced Import Ride Control Diagnostics And Replacement

Inside any active, hydraulic or air ride shock or strut, there is a piston that travels up and down a tube. Wear can occur between the piston and tube, and, over a period of time, oil will pass between the piston and tube. If the suspension bottoms out, contact between the piston and the bottom of the tube could occur, damaging the piston and the valving.

Active Shocks And Struts: What Are They And Why Are They Active?

For a shock or strut to be active, it must be able to react to three critical streams of information. First, it must act on information from the ABS and stability control system. Second, it must measure body movement. Third, it must detect the extent and rate of suspension movement.

Diagnosing ABS And Vehicle Stability Control Issues

These driver aids are empowered by control unit monitor inputs from the wheel speed sensors, steering angle sensor and yaw sensor. Using these inputs, the control unit makes decisions and sends output commands to the ABS modulator and throttle body to help the car follow the course that is expected by the driver.

BMW Active Shocks And Struts

Why would an engineer or automaker include this feature on a vehicle? An active dampener allows for a ride without compromise. The three inputs can be used to detect a rough road or an emergency situation where body roll could change the stability of the vehicle.

Hyundai: An Intermittent Problem That Stumped A Body Shop

We’re going to be looking at an intermittent poor-run, hard-start complaint on a 2012 Hyundai Sonata. This car came to us by way of a body shop with which we work closely. We received a call from the body shop that this car had been delivered back to the client a couple of weeks before. All was going well for a couple of days, when they received a call that the car was hard starting and running poorly. With it back in their shop, as you would expect, it ran and started well with the only sign of a problem being a check engine light with a P0087 code indicating the Fuel Rail/System Pressure was low.
