Tech Tip: Infiniti/Nissan Altima Coolant Leak

A severe coolant leak from the water pump’s weep holes causes the coolant to destroy the pump’s bearing, as well as leak into the engine’s oiling system. Catastrophic engine failure can result. This engine’s water pump is buried beneath the timing cover since it is internally driven off the engine’s timing chain. Since the front of the pump has direct contact with the engine’s oiling system, the weep holes have ….

Tech Tip: Coolant Leak Leads to Unnecessary Pump Replacement

A coolant leak from a source above the water pump or from an improperly installed bypass tube on the water pump itself will cause coolant to pool on top of the timing cover on 1993-2003 Dodge trucks and Jeeps. This coolant then rolls across the front of the pump and behind the pulley, making the pump appear to leak from the weep hole. This often results in unnecessary pump replacement ….

Saturn Tech Tip: Diagnosing a Cracked Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor

Customers may comment about various driveability and/or engine operating concerns including: hard start, erratic idle, rough running, engine overheating, low and/or leaking coolant and/or Service Engine Soon lamp illuminated on 1991-2001 Saturn S-Series vehicles. This condition may be caused by a cracked engine coolant temperature sensor. You’ll need to replace the engine coolant temperature sensor, inspect and, if necessary, replace the sensor harness connector ….

Tech Feature: Correcting Coolant Confusion

Have you ever seen the inside of an aluminum water pump that was not adequately protected by the corrosion inhibitors in the coolant? Or a radiator or heater core that failed from the inside out because of internal corrosion? These kinds of parts failures are all too common. Yet they can be easily prevented by using the "right" coolant and changing the coolant before trouble starts to heat up.

Tech Tip: Volkswagen Coolant Pump Leakage

Coolant pump seals are designed to use coolant as a lubricant. This design intentionally uses a small amount of coolant to coat the seals during pump operation. Any excess coolant that accumulates will exit the weep hole when the engine cools down. Minute traces of coolant or lubricant residue around the weep hole is not evidence of a faulty pump. Do not confuse a leaking coolant pump with one that is functioning as designed.

Tech Tip: Coolant Leak from Nissan Intake Manifold Water Outlet

Nissan owners may complain of engine coolant under the vehicle when parked or the smell of coolant when the engine is warm. The cause may be coolant leaking between the water outlet housing and intake manifold sealing surfaces. Refer to the Service Procedure to resolve this incident if it occurs.

Tech Tip: Diagnosing and Servicing a Coolant Leak

Water pumps work hard. As the miles add up, so does the wear and tear on the pump shaft bearing, seal and impeller. Erosion inside the pump can wear away the vanes on the impeller, causing it to pump less efficiently as the impeller is eaten away. This may lead to engine overheating on hot days or when the engine is working hard. If the water pump seal becomes worn, coolant will leak past the pump shaft or out of the small vent hole on the housing.

Tech Tip: What to Know When Coolant Leaks Occur

Engines run hot! Almost a third of the heat energy produced by combustion is absorbed by the engine itself. That’s why engines need a cooling system. The cooling system absorbs the engine’s waste-heat and prevents the engine from overheating and self-destructing.
