BMW Tech Tip: Diagnosing a Noisy Steering Wheel
Some BMW owners may complain of a squealing, groaning or grinding noise when turning the steering wheel.These noises may be caused because the plastic slip ring assembly that fits onto the steering shaft inside the rubber boot where the shaft passes through the engine compartment bulkhead can score, causing a noise as the shaft turns. This scoring is caused by a problem between the two white slip rings and the fixed collar of the ring assembly.
Tech Tip: BMW Radiator Vent Hose Fitting Replacement
A radiator vent hose replacement fitting is available (P/N 99 00 0 003 352) for the applicable models and should be used if a vent hose fitting replacement becomes necessary. The radiator vent hose fitting is located on top of the left side radiator tank.

Tech Tip: BMW Shift Lever Sticking in 5th/Reverse Gears
One of the following problems may occur on an affected BMW model manufactured prior to January 2003: the manual shift lever is difficult to move into and out of 5th gear and reverse; the manual shift lever does not automatically move from the 5th and reverse gears back to the center/neutral position; or there is no manual shift lever guidance, indicating looseness of the shifter.
Tech Tip: BMW Timing Chain Whining Noise
On E38 750iL models with the M73 engine, a whining noise that is generated by the rotation of the timing chain at approximately 1,000 – 1,500 rpm may be heard at all engine temperatures. The timing chain noise is a normal engine operating noise that is transmitted to the body of the vehicle and into the passenger compartment via the engine, transmission and exhaust system mounts.
