Pulling Codes: Hit or Miss? Part III

In the first two articles, we looked at cranking compression and tailpipe analysis. We will now explore in-cylinder analysis. In order to have an understanding of this concept, one must envision the four-stroke cycle at the time the plug fires as a reference. This denotes the end of our compression stroke, and the beginning of the power stroke for that cylinder.

Tech Tip: Liquid Tools Tip

Each side of the engine block has four main bearing cap side bolts that hold the bearing caps to the side of the engine block. The bolt threads, however, aren’t sealed at the factory, so sometimes engine oil can seep past the threads and the bolt washer, causing a leak on either side of the block. Fortunately, it’s an easy fix, so there is no need to replace the short block.
