NHTSA Moves Forward With V2V Communications Technology Implementation

On Aug. 18, the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) released an advance notice of proposed rulemaking with a goal of requiring vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication capability for light vehicles, including passenger cars and light truck vehicles. The rule would create minimum performance requirements for V2V devices and messages. The notice also included an outline for a comprehensive study of V2V technology that would focus on “technical feasibility, privacy and security, and preliminary estimates on costs and safety benefits,” according to a report from the Automotive Service Association (ASA).

NHTSA is currently taking public comment on the issue through Oct. 20, and is working to deliver a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking by 2016. To view more from NHTSA and a copy of its recommended comprehensive report on V2V technology, click here.

Emerging vehicle technology continues to be an important item of interest for ASA, the association states. ASA and the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers hosted the first Technology and Telematics Expo Aug. 1 during NACE | CARS 2014 in Detroit.
