Tech Tip: Volvo Rattle Noise From Dual Mass Flywheel

If a rattle noise is heard on a vehicle with a manual transmission, attention should be paid to the Dual Mass Flywheel (DMF). In the case of customer complaints, follow the steps listed in this Tech Tip.

Tech Tip: Vibrations on Volvos While Driving

Wheel vibrations may occur if the wheel is not installed in the exact center position on the wheel hub. To avoid radial misalignment between the wheel and the hub, they must have the same diameters. It has been discovered on some cars that the wheel hubs (spare parts as well as production parts) may have a center cone with a “too small” outer diameter. If a wheel is installed on such a hub, it is possible that the wheel is installed with an offset of 1.5 mm (0.059″), which can cause wheel vibrations while driving.

Tech Tip: Volvo Brake Goes Too Low on First Application

If a customer complains of Volvo brakes going too low on first application, it may be because of improperly installed brakes or aerated fluid.

Tech Tip: New Aftermarket Automotive Belts and Hoses Last Longer

pylene diene monomer), a synthetic rubber that is far more durable, heat-resistant and wear-resistant than Neoprene. This means serpentine belts and hoses made of EPDM may last up to 100,000 miles or more before they have to be replaced. But that doesn’t mean they will last forever.

Tech Tip: Dozens of Additional Vehicle Models Now Factory-Equipped with OAD Decouplers

Dozens of the latest vehicle models from domestic and import manufacturers are now factory equipped with overrunning alternator decouplers (OAD). The rapidly growing popularity of this sophisticated technology – now featured on more than 60 popular applications – is changing the way parts providers and repair professionals specify alternators, belts and pulleys for replacement applications.

Tech Tip: Volvo S40/V50/C30/C70 Front Suspension Squeak

When driving at low speeds or cornering, a squeaking noise from the front suspension may be heard. A possible source of this noise is the bump rubber.

Tech Tip: Replacing a Volvo Fuel Pump Connector

Use the following procedure to replace the fuel pump connector on 1993 and newer 850, S70, V70 and C70 models. For five-door vehicles, remove the four screws from the floor hatch, pull the hatch backward and lift it out. For four-door vehicles, remove the floor mat, loosen the right panel at the front edge and fold it away.

Tech Tip: Volvo Owners Complain of Brake Humming During Braking

Some Volvo owners (2001-2004 S60, V70, V70XC and 1999-2004 S80) may complain about constant vibrations and humming while braking (not from ABS modulation). Variations in the thickness of the front brake discs may cause a pulsing pedal or erratic deceleration during normal braking just before coming to a complete stop. Speeds at which the symptoms are most evident are 55-70 MPH. Steering wheel vibrations in the ….

Tech Tip: Steering Position and Yaw

The Electronic Stability Control (ESC) program uses the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) and Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) to maintain vehicle stability in a cornering maneuver. The ESC program requires the communication between the Engine Control Module (ECM) and ABS controller. This communication takes place on the Controlled Area Network (CAN) buss of the vehicle. The program uses input from the following sensors: steering wheel position, throttle pedal position, throttle position, engine speed, brake switch, wheel speed, yaw and ….

Tech Tip: Volvo Power Steering Reservoir Fluid Leak

Under certain conditions, the power steering may leak fluid at the reservoir suction hose connection. An improved suction hose was introduced into production in December 2004. If there is leakage at the reservoir/suction hose connection on the vehicles listed in this Tech Tip, replace only the suction hose and clamps, according to ….

Tech Tip: Choosing the Right Coolant

What makes choosing the right coolant so confusing today is that the automakers themselves can’t agree on what type of coolant chemistry is best for their vehicles. Some vehicle manufacturers prefer one type of corrosion inhibitors in their coolants, while other vehicle manufacturers may insist on a different type ….

Tech Tip: Proper Tools Essential for Handling TPMS Issues

Just as the sports world claims you can’t identify the players without a program, the tire industry chants that you can’t fix a problem without the right tools. The world of tire pressure monitoring systems, or TPMS, is no different. In fact, having the proper tools is critical to servicing vehicles equipped with TPMS. While technology has done its best to ….
