Tech Tip: Fixing Outlandish Squeaks on Mitsubishi Outlander and Lancer Vehicles

Squeaks from the rear of 2002 to 2005 Mitsubishi Outlanders or Lancers, most noticeable when traveling over speed bumps, may be caused by a corroded outer lower control arm bushing. Water intrusion through the control arm bushing seal may allow corrosion, resulting in a squeak during control arm movement. The factory-recommended repair is to replace the parts with updated versions that are designed to prevent water intrusion.

Tech Tip: Mitsubishi Outlander Gets Nervous Going Camping

Paul and Jody look forward to spending time with their kids away from the hustle and bustle of the city. After returning from a fun-filled weekend of camping in their 2003 Outlander, Paul called to ask about a problem he had noticed. On V6 and DOHC models, it is normal to hear a valve noise (a "ticking" sound) during the first two minutes after engine start-up. However, vehicles that are overdue for an oil change or have not been started for a long period of time may experience the noise for longer than two minutes. The noise is caused by air in the high-pressure chamber inside the automatic valve lash adjusters.

Tech Tip: Mitsubishi Spark Plug Fouling

Customers with any Mitsubishi model who drive short distances in cold weather may experience spark plug fouling. If a vehicle is hard to start or exhibits rough idle or misfire, the spark plugs may be wet or have some accumulated carbon deposits. Cleaning the plugs should correct the problem. Spark plug replacement should not be necessary.
