Tech Tip: Follow These Steps Prior to Replacing Kia’s Catalytic Converter After Finding DTC P0422

Kia’s OBD II engine management systems use dual oxygen sensors, which among other things allow monitoring of the efficiency of the Manifold Catalytic Converter (MCC), also referred to as the “warmup” cat. Some technicians who retrieve DTC P0422 – Main Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1) mistakenly replace the catalytic converter under the floor of the vehicle (possibly because the converter under the car has been referred to as the “main” catalyst). This leads to repeat repairs, unnecessary expense and customer dissatisfaction.

Tech Tip: Kia Throttle Body Cleaning

Some Kia drivers may complain of an engine that is hard to start, or that won’t start at all. DTCs P2110, P2118 or P2119 (throttle valve stuck closed) may be present on Theta 2.0L/2.4L engine-equipped vehicles. The condition may occur from carbon deposits and/or fuel additives accumulated in the throttle body.

This bulletin provides information relating to an engine hesitation or the illumination of the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) for P0123 (Throttle Position Sensor/Switch “A” Circuit High Input). Kia Tech Tip: DTC P0460 Update for Sephia Models

The original logic used for DTC P0460 (fuel level sensor circuit malfunction) in 2000 model year Sephias would illuminate the MIL and store a fault code for circuit-related problems (open or short), and for a fuel level input signal that failed to stay within the “plausibility” test limits stored in the ECM. “Plausibility” or “rationality” checks are frequently built into the ECM software to make sure that test results outside the normal range are detected as possible faults.

In areas where heavy road salt use occurs, customer complaints have identified increased steering effort and noise (from the steering intermediate shaft) on the 2002-’05 (GQ) Sedona. The increased effort is usually first noticed with a noise or rattle at low speeds. When addressing such customer concerns, replace the steering intermediate shaft using P/N 0K52Y 32550 following the instructions in this technical service bulletin.

Some owners of 2002-’05 Sedona vehicles produced from May 1, 2001, to Aug. 31, 2005, may complain of front suspension noise over rough road surfaces at speeds between 18-31 mph.
