One torque specification for axle nut torque is impossible. This video is sponsored by BCA Bearings by NTN.
Driveshaft problems can be spotted from the moment you put the vehicle in gear to pull it into a bay. As the power is transmitted from the transmission to the rear axle, the slack from worn or damaged components is taken up, resulting in a sudden crunch or pop. Once the vehicle is moving, you
AWD vs. 4WD: In contrast to an all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicle, a four-wheel drive vehicle is typically equipped with a two-speed transfer case capable of driving in two or four-wheel drive and a Hotchkiss or “solid” rear drive axle for main propulsion. A four-wheel drive might incorporate either a solid front axle as with older Toyotas and Nissans or an independent front suspension as found in more modern configurations.
Andrew Markel discusses bearing installation and how the torque specification of axle nuts should be closely followed. Sponsored by FAG.
Customers may complain of cracking noises heard from the area of the front axle when rotating the steering while stationary or at low speed. The cause could be a loose connection securing the front axle and front end components. To correct the problem, tighten the loose components or lubricate the bearing surfaces.
The estimated value for these programs total more than £300 million (approximately $370 million USD).
Replacing wheel bearings on a vehicle with a live rear axle may not be one of the most frequent jobs you do, but it can be one of the most profitable. While the basics have not changed in more than 60 years, new seal materials and differential designs have added new wrinkles to the process.
