Nissan Tech Tip: Worn A/T Differential Pinion Shaft

Nissan Tech Tip: Worn A/T Differential Pinion Shaft

Debris from a worn differential pinion mate shaft can cause the following: slipping on acceleration; hesitation and/or stalling when cold; and abnormal noise coming from the transmission while driving. A countermeasure transmission differential case, with improved lubrication to the differential pinion mate shaft, has been developed to resolve these types of transmission incidents.

Debris from a worn differential pinion mate shaft can cause the following:
• Slipping on acceleration;
• Hesitation and/or stalling when cold; and
• Abnormal noise coming from the transmission while driving.

A countermeasure transmission differential case, with improved lubrication to the differential pinion mate shaft, has been developed to resolve these types of transmission incidents.

Applied Vehicles:
• 1992-’94 Maxima (J30 – VE30DE engine);
• 1995-’96 Maxima (A32);
• 1993-’96 Altima (U13); and
• 1994-’96 Quest (V40).

Applied Transmission:
Transmissions built prior to #4Y22962 or #8Z53044 (depends on production line).

SERVICE PROCEDURE:
1. Verify the customer’s complaint. If the transmission exhibits slipping on acceleration, hesitation and/or stalling when cold, or any abnormal noises coming from the transmission while driving, and no trouble codes are found in self-diagnosis, remove the transmission oil pan and inspect for metal debris.

2. If excessive metal debris is found, disassemble the transmission and inspect for burnt or worn components. If wear marks are found on the differential pinion mate shaft (refer to Fig. 1), replace the shaft and install a countermeasure differential case (P/N 38411-81X01). Replace all other burnt or worn components as necessary.

Fuel Pumps and Cranking

Diagnosing the problem comes down to understanding what causes a loss of fuel pressure.

Here is a diagnostic puzzle: An owner comes to your shop complaining that it takes longer than expected to start his car’s engine in the morning. There are no codes for the crankshaft and camshaft sensors. And, the oil pressure is within specifications. If you are lucky, you might have a code for low fuel pressure on the high side of the direct injection system. What could be the source of the problem?
