KIA EV or HEV No Start Due to Fast Shift

Here's why your Kia EV or HEV vehicle might not start after a fast shift.

  • 2011-2016 Optima Hybrid (TF P/HEV)
  • 2017 Optima Hybrid (JF P/HEV), Niro (DE P/HEV);
  • 2015-2019Soul EV (PSEV)

If the ignition is turned to START or Engine Start/Stop Button (SSB) is pressed with the brake pedal depressed and then the vehicle is quickly shifted from Park (P) to Drive (D) or Reverse (R), the vehicle may not start or may not go to READY mode.

This is because the vehicle’s HV system readiness checks have not been completed. This is also known as “Shift Before READY.” If “Shift Before READY” occurs, the green READY symbol (A) will not be illuminated. The vehicle will need to be shifted back into P and then restarted (ignition cycled).
