The following day, President James Abram Garfield was sworn in as 20th President of the United States. Garfield was assassinated one-hundred ninety-nine days into his term and was replaced by Vice President Chester Alan Arthur.
Legendary Western outlaw Billy the Kid, whose real name was Henry McCarty, but who also went by William Bonney and Kid Antrim, was shot on July 14, 1881.
