Honda: Idle Speed Drops When Steering Wheel Is Turned

If the idle speed drops when a Honda's steering wheel is turned, perform a PCM idle learn procedure and a carbon accumulation check.

Model: 2011 Honda Civic

To perform a PCM idle learn procedure:

1. Make sure all electrical items (the A/C, the audio system, the lights, etc.) are off.

2. Reset the ECM/PCM.

3. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II), and wait two seconds.

4. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm without load (A/T in P or N, M/T in neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, or until the engine coolant temperature reaches 194 °F (90 °C).

5. Let the engine idle for about five minutes with the throttle fully closed.

Note: If the radiator fan comes on, do not include its running time in the five minutes.

Perform a carbon accumulation check:

Note: If the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) has been reported on, check for diagnostic trouble codes.

1. Connect scan tool to DLC port.

2. Turn the ignition switch to ON (II).

3. Start the engine. Hold the engine speed at 3,000 rpm without load (A/T in P or N, M/T in neutral) until the radiator fan comes on, then let it idle.

4. Check the REL TP SENSOR. The reading should be below 2.46 percent. If it is not, clean the throttle body.

Honda Oil System Inspection

The leading cause of low oil pressure-related complaints with Honda vehicles is the oil level.

Just about every engine lubrication system, including Honda’s, operates the same in theory. An oil pump generates the pressure, oil is sent to oil galleys, and then flows back into the pan. In practice, however, it is much more complicated. An oil system practically manages a controlled leak into the oil pan.
