Bosch Launches Expanded Aftermarket Fuel Injector Coverage, Includes Modern Injectors for Older Vehicles

The Robert Bosch Corporation has launched a broad new line of advanced gasoline fuel injectors for current and older domestic and import vehicles. The modern, second generation injectors, in widespread OE use since 1992, cover millions of current vehicles operating in the United States, and can be installed in millions of older vehicles originally equipped with older-technology fuel injectors.

"The second generation Bosch fuel injector is strong, durable and quiet. It is ‘over molded’ to form a one-piece injector with no internal seals or seams to leak. With fewer parts, the injector is lighter, more compact, and easier to install. This injector provides a greater fuel dynamic flow range and refined spray pattern for improved fuel atomization and mixture combustion. Plus, the molded plastic shell eliminates exposed metal parts, preventing corrosion," said Warren Suter, director of product management, Engine Management Products, for Bosch.

"An improved seat design yields a more positive seal, and less current draw reduces the possibility of ECU failure. The injector’s increased dynamic range provides smoother performance and better fuel metering throughout a broad RPM range," Suter noted.

Bosch introduced electronic fuel injection with the VW Type 3 Fastback 1600 in 1967. The first electronic fuel injection system utilized multi-port fuel injectors (EV1) and Bosch introduced the second-generation (EV6) injectors in 1992. The EV6 injectors were first installed as OE on 1992 Mercedes and Ford vehicles.

"Thanks to their highly effective sealing, these injectors fulfill all future requirements concerning zero evaporation. That is, no fuel vapor escapes from them. In addition, EV6 is outstanding with regards to its hot-fuel behavior. Especially important in ‘return-less’ fuel supply systems, EV6 reduces the formation of bubbles in hot fuel for improved drivability," Suter said.

Installed in millions of vehicles worldwide since 1992, this efficient, long-lasting fuel injector has a minimal failure rate. Bosch produced its billionth fuel injector two years ago.

The EV6 injectors can be installed in domestic and imported vehicles currently equipped with them, and interchanged with older-technology OE injectors in selected older vehicles. With their superior fuel flow and spray pattern, the EV6 should improve vehicle fuel and operating efficiency when replacing older-type injectors.

"This is a prime example of OE engineering brought to the aftermarket – one more in the series of ‘better than OE’ engine management components for many replacement applications," Suter said. Bosch fuel injectors will be available through Bosch WDs and traditional jobbers for OE applications.

"Bosch supplies OE fuel injectors, with legendary Bosch quality and reliability, to virtually every vehicle manufacturer in the world. Bosch aftermarket fuel injectors are manufactured in the same world-class facilities that Bosch uses in manufacturing original equipment fuel injectors," Suter added.
