ASE Recognizes April As National Car Care Month

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence notes that vehicle owners who keep on top of maintenance and service schedules can extend the life of their vehicles, will see better gasoline mileage and can rest easier, knowing they have lessened the odds of a mechanical breakdown.

The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE), the group that tests and certifies automotive technicians, joins others in the industry in recognizing April as National Car Care Month.

“April is the perfect time for car owners to take their vehicles in for servicing,” said ASE President Tim Zilke. “You can undo the wear-and-tear of winter driving while getting the family car ready for the summer months ahead.”

ASE notes that vehicle owners who keep on top of maintenance and service schedules can extend the life of their vehicles, will see better gasoline mileage and can rest easier, knowing they have lessened the odds of a mechanical breakdown. In addition, a well-maintained car can command a higher resale or trade-in price. “There’s no downside to routine car care,” added Zilke.

For help in choosing a repair shop, ASE suggests consumers do their homework by asking friends and co-workers for recommendations, as well as consulting local consumer groups. They also suggest looking for a neat, well-organized facility, with vehicles in the parking lot equal in value to their own and modern equipment in the service bays. Once inside, ASE notes that car owners should look for signs of professionalism such as civic, community or customer service awards. In addition, consumers should look for evidence of qualified technicians: trade school diplomas, certificates of advanced coursework and ASE certification of the technicians.

Full details on how to select a repair facility plus other tips for consumers can be found at ase.com/drivers, ASE’s new webpage for drivers.
